Actors, directors be arbiters of cuss words in films: Pookutty

Academy Award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty believes that actors and directors are the better judges to decide whether a cuss word or phrase was appropriate for a film rather than imposing a blanket ban on it. “It can better be understood by the actors and for that matter the director to decide on the choice and use of words given in a particular sequence of a film,” Pookutty, who was in Kolkata to attend a seminar on sound, told PTI. His reaction was asked about the recent Censor Board move to ban a list of cuss words. About British filmmaker Leslee Udwin’s banned documentary ‘India’s Daughter’ for which he had done sound designing, Pookutty said, banning a film would not solve the problem. “If we are obsessed about the image of the country, we must allow people to have their own opinion. If there are valid reasons to ban, then ban. But the film we had banned could be viewed by people in the digital media,” he said. Pookutty, who rates Ritwik Ghatak as a mentor, said he was interested in doing Bengali films. “I derived a lot from Bengal and like the works of Srijit (Mukherji), Buddhadeb (Dasgupta) and would love to do a film in Kolkata after being part of the latter’s ‘Anwar’.” (PTI)
