TURA: A young student of Don Bosco School, Tura, drowned on Monday during a picnic near Jengjal.
The teenage boy, Stephen Sangma, a Class VI student of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School was staying in the Boys Home hostel of the school.
On Monday all the hostellers had gone for a picnic to Waribokgre stream when the accident took place.
The boys were reportedly playing volleyball in the water when one of them was swept away by the strong currents.
Most streams and rivers in Garo Hills have swelled due to the recent storms with the most recent thunderstorm having taken place on Saturday night.
“The boys were advised by the Brother who accompanied them to avoid going into the deep water. They were playing a game of volleyball in a shallow part of the stream when one of the children got caught in the water current and drowned,” informed School headmaster Fr. Janurius Sangma.
The deceased hailed from Nangalbibra and lived with his grandmother.
