Slain cop’s laptop, phones sent for forensic tests

SHILLONG: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Patharkhmah Sub-Inspector P.J. Marbaniang has sent the laptop and mobiles belonging to the slain officer to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Hyderabad, for investigation.
SP (Shillong City) Vivek Syiem, who is supervising the case, on Monday asserted that the SIT was making good progress in its investigation of the case, even as he informed that more than fifty people have been examined so far.
According to Syiem, since no witness was present during the incident, the team was working on the circumstantial evidences.
The SIT has been given three months to complete its probe into the death of the police official.
“We are trying our best to complete the investigation at the earliest,” Syiem said.
Though prima facie it was presumed to be a suicide case, discrepancies in the medical and post-mortem reports and the version of the doctor prompted the State Government to set up a Special Investigation Team after registering a murder case.
Marbaniang’s body was found with bullet wounds on his head on the night of January 24 less than 24 hours after he had detained 32 coal-laden trucks which were illegally transporting coal. The SIT team and forensic experts had inspected Marbaniang’s official quarter; however, the wife of the slain cop had alleged that the crime scene at the quarter had been disturbed and tampered with.
