Inclusion of Khasi in Eighth Schedule

SHILLONG: The four-member Sub-Committee is expected to submit its report to the Committee constituted by the State Government to pursue the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
“We are expecting to submit the report to the special committee anytime soon. The sub-committee is likely to have its final meeting before submitting its report,” Art and Culture Director Matsiewdor War informed here on Tuesday.
War, who is also the convener of the Special Committee constituted by the Government, said that the four-member committee has completed the task assigned to it.
“The basic assignment which was given to the committee was to try to find out the additional criteria required to be complied with for a language to find place in the Eighth Schedule,” she said.
Other members of the Sub-Committee include MBOSE Executive Chairman E.P. Kharbhih, Dr. Sylvanus Lamare from the Sahitya Akademi and S. Quotient Sumer, former member of the Sahitya Akademi.
The State Government had notified the committee constituted exclusively to speed up the process of getting the Khasi language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The committee is headed by Deputy Chief Minister R.C. Laloo and has 15 members.
Besides Laloo and War, other members of the committee include Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, legislators Pynshngainlang Syiem, Paul Lyngdoh and Witting Mawsor, Dr. Sylvanus Lamare, Dr. DRL Nonglait (representative of the Khasi Authors’ Society), Dr. Streamlet Dkhar, HoD, Khasi, NEHU, the Secretary, Law Department and the Principal Secretary, Arts and Culture Department.
