SHILLONG: Just months after LED lights were put up across the city to light up the city streets most of them have stopped functioning.
What is surprising however is the fact that sources from the Urban Affairs Department have admitted that the lights provided by the supplier had become non-functional much before the end of the guarantee period.
LED lights are known to have a very long shelf life often running into several years.
According to sources, the Urban Affairs department has directed the CEO of the Shillong Municipal Board to follow up the matter with the supplier to repair and replace all the lights which are non functional.
LED lights were installed in several areas of the city like Laitumkhrah, GS Road, Motphran and others.
It is learnt that as many as 800 street lights are not working and need repair or replacement. Even the National Highways 40 and 44, which pass through the heart of the city, fare no better as far as street lights are concerned.
