Locals ready to broker peace between GNLA, govt

TURA: With Garo militant outfit the GNLA making known its willingness to come for peace talks following the recent announcement in the Assembly by Meghalaya Governor offering conditional talks with the outfit, an offer to act as interlocutor to broker peace between the government and the outfit has also been made and submitted to Meghalaya Government.
In their proposal submitted on April 1, Arun N Marak, a resident of Tambo Ading, Williamnagar in East Garo Hills and Dr Zimmey Carter N Sangma from Dakopgre, Tura, volunteered to act as interlocutors between the two sides in the interest of lasting peace in the region.
“The armed struggle by the GNLA and retaliatory action by police and paramilitary forces have put the lives of ordinary citizens at risk. The insecurity in Garo Hills has also driven out investment opportunities which could have generated employment for the local people. It is imperative that peace must return to Garo Hills and we would be willing to act as interlocutor between the two sides if the Meghalaya Government so desires,” their proposal stated.
