Guwahati: The Centre and Assam Government have stressed on maintaining a balance in generating power by laying equal importance on thermal, hydro and renewable energy sources.
Discussing ways and means for improving power scenario in the state with Union Minister of State for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal at his residence in Guwahati on Friday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi assured to extend all possible support for harnessing the power potential of Assam in harmony with the environment, ecology and people. The Chief Minister also informed that the state is all set for exploring the thermal power potential and efforts are being taken for capacity utilisation of the coal reserve in the state.
Gogoi also requested the Union Power Minister to expedite disposal of the pending proposals of Assam for increasing the supply of gas to the state owned generating stations at Lakwa and Namrup by taking up the matter with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Gogoi also requested Goyal to look into the proposal for the final clearance of the pending Kopili Hydro Electric Project. Emphasising the need of exploiting the renewable energy sources in the state, Gogoi mentioned that the State Government is keen to set up a Solar Power Project with the assistance of the Government of India at Amguri in Sivasagar district.
