SHILLONG: The 56-km-long road from Shillong to Sohra is a beautiful stretch of black-topped track with picturesque sceneries and driving on this road is certainly an experience to remember. However, certain groups of young bikers often hit this road for stunting and other thrills have now turned the pleasure of driving into a nightmare for others.
Bikers driving their two wheelers like a beast on this road with no sense of respect for either the traffic rules or other drivers have become a familiar sight o this road these days.
Residents living along the Shillong-Sohra road say that most of the bikers visit the place on Sunday and they drive their bikes like they are demon-possessed, even risking their lives and throwing the lives of others into jeopardy.
They say that many times such young bikers have met with deadly accidents on the road but still some over-excited youths, who are at the peak of their youth, often send pedestrians into a tizzy with their stunts.
Apart from rash driving, the youths are also seen performing daredevil stunts along the treacherous road which has deep gorges and such acts are bound to create serious mishaps sooner than later.
Reacting on this matter, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, M. Kharkrang, said that the police are aware of the fact that many unruly bikers visit the area especially on Sundays and police often conduct surprise checks to catch such unruly people who do not respect the traffic laws.
“We penalize them once we catch them,” Kharkrang said, but people in and around Sohra say that the bikers enjoy a free for all since the cops are not interested in keeping a regular tab on these daredevils.
