TURA: Nothing seems to be going right in Garo Hills – be it the law and order situation or the education scenario.
Added to the problems posed by frequent calls for bandh, shutdown and blockade by militant outfits and pressure groups, the education scenario in Garo Hills is badly affected due to the absence of proper heads in almost all the Government-run secondary and higher secondary schools and colleges of the region.
The matter came to light when a delegation of A’chik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA) visited the Office of the Joint Director and Additional Director of School Education and Literacy in Tura recently.
It was found that several schools namely Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Tura, Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Tura, Rongrenggiri Government Higher Secondary School in Williamnagar, Dadenggiri Puri Government Higher Secondary School in Dadenggiri, Ampati Government Higher Secondary School, Dalu Government Higher Secondary School, Resu Government Higher Secondary School and Kharkutta Government Higher Secondary School are functioning without proper heads.
Besides, it was also found that the posts of the Additional Director, DSEL and Additional District School Education Officer at Tura have been lying vacant for more than a year. The incumbent Joint Director has been holding addition charge of Additional Director, DSEL. Moreover, the posts of Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO) at Williamnagrar and Ampati have also been lying vacant for a long period.
Captain Williamson Memorial Government College at Baghmara and Williamnagar Government College have been functioning without either a full-fledged Principal or a Vice Principal. While the Tura Government College has been functioning for three years without a permanent Vice Principal .
Meanwhile, concerned over the plight of the student community of Garo Hills the ASWA has demanded the immediate appointment of qualified officials to all vacant posts while warning of a full scale stir if it fails to respond.
