Nagaland Police launches NPSVMS to detect stolen vehicles
Kohima: Nagaland Police has launched an SMS based Vehicle Monitoring System (NPSVMS) to address thefts of vehicles. According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Department, the system was launched by Home Minister Y Patton in the Police Headquarters here yesterday. Of late, vehicular thefts have become a matter of serious concern in the state as many professional gangsters from other states have been operating in connivance with some habitual criminals of our state,†Mr Patton said. He said most of the stolen vehicles could not be traced or recovered because quick reaction within the required time frame could not be initiated. He was optimistic that with the launching of NPSVMS, the ability and efficiency of Nagaland Police personnel in curbing criminal activities, particularly vehicular thefts, will be further enhanced. Four poachers killed in Kaziranga
Kaziranga (Assam): Four poachers have been killed following an encounter with a joint team of forest guards and Special Task Force in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of about six to seven poachers in the area, the forest guards and Special Task Force launched an operation in Agratoli range of the Park since last evening, a senior Park official said. An encounter took place Wednesday evening near Duramoni Noloni camp where two poachers were killed on the spot while the others managed to escape but the forest guards and security personnel chased them. An encounter took place again and two poachers were shot at but their bodies were recovered this morning. The poachers have been identified as Karpung Pegu, Jit Doley, Brown Mili and Yusuf Ali and a .303 rifle, two silences. 10 live cartridges, eight empty cartridges and some food materials were recovered. Altogether nine rhinos have been killed in the park while 20 poachers were killed and 22 poachers/linkmen arrested by forest guards and security forces in the park and its adjoining areas so far during this year. Cows seized in Dhubri
Dhubri: A BSF jawan of its 17th battalion seized 139 cows worth over Rs 12 lakh as they were being smuggled out from Dhubri district in Assam to across Bangladesh today, a BSF official said. On a tip off the jawan seized the cows as they were being smuggled out from three villages to the neighbouring country through a riverine road on the Indo-Bangladesh border, BSF commandant B B Sidhra said. The cows were taken from Chowkirchar, Gaspara and Old Dewaneralga villages under Dhubri police station, Sidhara said. The smugglers, however, fled away leaving behind the cows, he said, adding the cattleheads were handed over to the Customs department. (PTI)
Army man held for misbehaving with women
Rangia: An army personnel was arrested for misbehaving with three women, including two college and a school teacher, in the down Kamrup Express on Thursday at lower Assam’s Rangia, A GRP official said. The army habildar, identified as Yallappa Patil of 67 Field Regiment camp in Sibsagar district, physically touched and took photos of the three women travelling from Guwahati to Rangia for their work there, Government Railway Police (GRP) Rangia officer-in-charge Pradip Talukdar said. The three women who are daily commuters by the train for their work here registered an FIR with Rangia GRP with case No. 18/2015 under section 354 IPC, Talukdar said. On medical test he was found in an inebriated condition. (PTI)
Three suspected ULFA(I) militants held
Tezpur: Three suspected ULFA (Independent)militants were arrested during a joint operation by security forces in Assam’s Sonitpur district, police said on Wednesday. The police and troops of Six Maha Regiment launched an operation last night and caught the trio from the Brahmaputra river bank at Gohpur Kutumghat, Superintendent of Police of Bishwanath Chariali Police District, Manabendra Dev Ray said. The trio have been identified as Hemanta Saikia, Debojit Gogoi and Depen Sahu and two .32 mm pistols, three magazines and seven rounds of live ammunition were recovered from them. (PTI)
AGP leader joins BJP
Guwahati: Former Assam Assembly Speaker and Asom Gana Parishad leader Pulakesh Baruah on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. At a programme in the BJP state head office, Baruah joined the saffron camp along with a group of his supporters, a BJP spokesperson said. Baruah was the Speaker of the first AGP government in 1985 and was elected to the Assembly twice. Before joining the BJP, he was serving as the vice president of AGP. (PTI)
HC frames charge against Tripura Law Secretary in contempt case
Agartala: Tripura High Court has framed charges against state’s law secretary D M Jamatia on Wednesday prima facie for his derogatory comments against high court in his file notes. After hearing the case for past four months a division bench comprising Chief Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice S C Das today decided to frame contempt case which has been registered by the court following media report. Before proceeding to frame charges, the judges asked Jamatia whether he pleaded guilty. But he denied the charge in the court. The court has directed the Amicus Curiae Pijush Biswas to produce list of witnesses and record before May 6 for starting investigation of the case against Jamatia. Jamatia was accused of misguiding the state government in compliance to the judgment related to benefit towards reservation of SCs and STs in promotion in the service.
The high court issued a notice against the Law Secretary and his deputy Shankari Das seeking their reply. From the very beginning, Mr Jamatia has been giving misleading information to the court and denying the allegation against him. Initially, he did not deny the allegation. Later he said the file noting was tampered by the newspapers. Finally, he said the original file was missing. All the statements are utterly false, Mr Biswas told mediapersons. (UNI)
