Magisterial probe into custodial death in Tripura
Agartala: The government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into a custodial death reportedon Friday at the R K Pur Police Station of Udaipur in South Tripura.The victim was identified as Noor Islam (42), a resident of Chanban village in Udaipur.The victim’s family alleged that Islam was killed by the police in custody. He was arrested the previous night from the town allegedly for creating public nuisance under the influence of liquor. Inspector General of Police (law and order) Anurag said that Islam allegedly died in police lockup in the morning though police has a different version.Immediately a magisterial probe was ordered besides, a departmental inquiry. “If anybody is found guilty, whatever be the rank, he will be punished under law. ”There is no scope of any leniency in taking action and whatever is due as per law will be given to the victim’s family. But we have to wait till the reports,†Anurag said.He also pointed out that according to the statement of police, Islam had complained of chest pain early in the morning to the duty officer and was rushed to the Tripura Sundari district hospital where he was declared dead. Woman, child charred to death in Tripura
Agartala: A 19-year-old housewife and her six-month-old baby were charred to death inside their house at Daspara of Jirania in eastern part of Agartala in the wee hours of Saturday morning.Police said her husband Asim Das kept them locked inside the house and set it on fire. However, Asim was arrested. He did not admit to the crime yet.Police suspect that the woman was burnt alive with the baby following a family dispute. (UNI)
Nagaland launches Ashram Shakti Pehchaana campaign
Kohima: Coinciding with the International Labour Day, the Ashram Shakti Pehchaana (workers strength identification) campaign was launched at Dimapur on Friday.In an official release on Saturday, Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary for Labour and Employment S Chuba Longkumer, speaking as the chief guest, said it was to ensure the welfare of workers in the unorganized sector.Emphasising on the different schemes implemented by the Central government for specific groups of unorganised workers, he said the state government was also implementing welfare programmes for certain categories of unorganised sectors. However, he lamented that there was a huge deficit in coverage of agriculture workers, construction labourers etc. in the matter of labour protection and social security measures.Longkumer pointed out that though people were aware of the programmes implemented by different departments, there was no defined common platform through which beneficiaries could avail of the benefits without going through complex formalities. He assured that the department would extend all necessary help to make the programme successful. He also urged the NGOs, trade unions and other mass-based organisations to participate and extend their support for greater heights. (UNI)
