NE terror groups forum behind Nagaland ambush

Guwahati:   A united forum of North East terror groups, including NSCN and ULFA, on Monday claimed responsibility for ambush of an Assam Rifles vehicle in Mon district of Nagaland on Sunday, in which seven jawans were killed. In an emailed one-line statement to media here, the forum said, We the UNLFW are proudly taking responsibility of the first ever successful united ambush of IOF (Indian Occupational Force) in Changlangsu, Mon District, on May 3, 2015. Seven Assam Rifle jawans were killed and five injured, when their vehicle was ambushed in Monyakshu village under Tobu Sub-Division of Mon district of Nagaland on Sunday. The United National Liberation Front of WESA (Western South East Asia) (UNLFW) was formed on April 17 this year by NSCN, ULFA (I), NDFB and KLO, under the chairmanship of KK Khaplang, to have a united and total struggle to liberate the ancestral homes (comprising mostly North East India). However, a report from Kohima, Nagaland, said on Monday the NSCN(Khaplang) had claimed responsibility for killing eight Assam Rifles jawans on Sunday. (UNI)

Manipur ADC election campaign picks up for Jun 1 ADC polls

Imphal: The Congress, BJP and other parties have launched campaigns for the June 1 Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections in five districts. Congress president and Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has alleged that the NSCN(IM) was threatening party candidates. Hence, performance in Naga dominated areas may not be good. However, the party is expecting resounding success in the other four districts. Congress, BJP, Naga People’s Front, JD (U) have announced candidates for the polls so far. The Congress and BJP are likely to field candidates in all the 144 seats. Central leaders of the two parties are likely to campaign. The other party which has put up a sizeable number of aspirants is Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) with 78 candidates. Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang is likely to visit Manipur to take part in the campaign on May 12. Candidates and their supporters have started campaigning by visiting every household and organising meetings. But public meetings are not going on at large scale. (UNI)

Assam Rifles nabs arm dealer in Nagaland

Kohima:  Personnel of the 31st Battalion of Assam Rifles today apprehended a suspected arms dealer at Dikhu Iron Bridge near Longmisa village under Mokokchung district. According to Assam Rifles authorities, the arrest was made following information that one Chingmak Chang (27) of Nokshou village in Tuensang district was transporting weapons from Tuensang to Mokokchung.  Subsequently, a Mobile Vehicle Check Post was established along the route on Saturday and the suspect captured with two .22 pistols with magazine, two .22 live rounds and a motorbike. The accused, along with the seized items, has been handed over to the police. (UNI)

Mary Kom’s late father-in-law honoured at native village

New Delhi:  Gunned down by unknown assailants close to a decade back, Olympic bronze-medallist Indian woman boxer M C Mary Kom’s father-in-law Karong Rekhupthang Kom was honoured with a memorial stone at his native village in Manipur. The memorial stone has been erected at the Samulamlan village and the inauguration was attended by Mary and her husband Onler Kom. Karong Rekhupthang Kom was a pastor and teacher and was shot dead on 27 December 27, 2006 by unknown gunmen. (PTI)
