Abducted doctor couple returns home after 5 days

Gaya:  Five days after being abducted, the doctor couple, Pankaj Gupta and Shubhra Gupta, on Wednesday returned home here in Bihar, Director General of Police P K Thakur said. However, details are not available right now, Thakur told. The couple was kidnapped on Friday while they were returning home by car from Giridih in neighbouring Jharkhand where they had gone to attend a wedding function. Their abduction, allegedly for ransom, created a storm in the political circle as well as medical fraternity with BJP claiming return of “jungle raj” in Bihar. The Indian Medical Association had also threatened to launch a stir if the state government failed to rescue the couple from the clutches of their abductors. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had directed the police to take steps to rescue the couple and said he would himself monitor the steps being taken in this regard. Kumar had also met the doctor couple’s relatives at Gaya during his visit there two days ago.(PTI)
Arson in UP town as girl flees with boy of another community
Mathura: Tension prevailed in Sonkh town of the district as a group of people indulged in arson on Wednesday after a girl of their community allegedly eloped with a boy of another community, officials said. Markets in the area were partially closed as the rampaging group took out a procession and burnt some items taken out from a worship place, police said, adding they also burnt waste articles in front of the house of the boy with whom the girl, said to be in her teens, is alleged to have eloped on May 2. A large number of police personnel along with one company of Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary  has been deployed in the area to maintain peace, they said. “Situation is tense but absolutely under control and hunt is on to nab the anti-social elements involved in arson,” said District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar, who had reached the area. “Efforts are on to recover the girl,” Kumar added.(PTI)

Sub-inspector sends resignation via Whatsapp

Kanpur: In a first, a sub-inspector posted at Kanpur Dehat district has sent his resignation via Whatsapp to a helpline number started by the police for addressing the complaints by the public. Alleging harassment and insult by senior officials, sub-inspector Vinod Kumar posted at Rasulabad police station sent his resignation last night, PRO of the Kanpur Zone IG said. “We have directed SP of Kanpur Dehat, Sabharaj to investigate the matter and submit the report within 24 hours following which action would be taken,” IG Ashutosh Pandey said. This is the first time that a police official has submitted his resignation through such a platform, he said. A helpline number, for the 176 police station in the nine districts of Auraiya, Etawah, Farukhabad, Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Kannuaj, Jhansi, Jalaun under Kanpur Zone was started on April 16 by IG Pandey. A Whatsapp account was also created for the people to register their complaints to the police through video, audio and text messages.(PTI)

Two naxals surrender 

Raipur:  Two naxals, carrying cash reward on their heads, surrendered on Wednesday in Chhattisgarh’s insurgency-hit Kondagaon district citing exploitation of lower rung cadres and women by senior Maoist leaders, police said. Rajman Korram (26) and Govind Netam (26), working at prominent capacities of the banned CPI (Maoist) in the jungles of Kondgaoan turned themselves in, Kondgaon Superintendent of Police Abhishek Meena told. Since his association with the outlawed movement in 2005, Rajman has been involved in 13 major naxal incidents, including attacks on police party and murder in the region, Meena said. He was an active member of military company-6 of the Maoist, the SP said, adding that he was carrying a reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head. Ultra Govind, a member of Kuwanar area committee, was a key naxal courier in the region and allegedly supported Maoists in executing about twenty incidents, he said. The cash reward of Rs 5 lakh was declared for the arrest of Govind, he added. The duo in their statements said the senior Maoist cadres exploited the lower rung cadres and were forcefully recruiting minor tribal girls to attract male cadres in the movement, the SP said. The surrendered cadres also alleged that extortion and violence have become “prime motive” of senior cadres. Necessary assistance will be provided to the surrendered naxals as per the government policy, Meena added.(PTI)

BSF seizes cannabis

Kolkata: Border Security Force personnel seized 6.5 kg of cannabis while it was being smuggled from West Bengal into Bangladesh, an officer said on Wednesday.The seizure was made in Nadia district on Tuesday.”While the smugglers who were carrying the consignment to Bangladesh managed to escape, we have seized 6.5 kg ganja,” a BSF officer said.The BSF has seized over 290 kg of ganja from across the south Bengal frontier and apprehended five smugglers so far in 2015.
