Noted Assam historian no more

GUWAHATI: Noted historian, sociologist and scholar, Dr Amalendu Guha passed away at around 3.45 A.M. on Thursday at his residence here. He was 91.
A large number of his followers and admirers rushed to his residence in the morning once the news of Dr Guha’s death spread. Noted litterateur ad intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain termed his death an irreparable loss to the nation.
Governor, Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, expressed his deep sense of grief at the demise of the renowned Dr Guha. He said at the death of Dr Guha the nation has lost a great soul, a patron of learning and knowledge and an extraordinary philanthropist.
The Governor recalled the immense contributions of Dr. Guha to the society through his great literary works and social activities and added that he had even donated his body for the cause of medical science and for the cause of the society and humanity. The Governor conveyed his sincere condolences to Dr. Anima Guha, the wife of late Dr. Guha and to the other members of the bereaved family.
Assam’s rural development minister, Rakibul Hussain called on the bereaved family on behalf of chief minister Tarun Gogoi to pay respect to the departed historian. Gogoi, who is currently in New Delhi, called up the wife of Dr Guha to convey his condolence.
Dr Guha was born on January 30, 1924 in Imphal. He graduated from Presidency College in Calcutta and secured his master’s degree from Calcutta University. He started his career in teaching as a lecturer at Darrang College in Sonitpur district of Assam. He did research on Afghanistan’s economy for his Ph.D. degree.
