Nagaland Chief Secy visits waste management site in Kohima
Kohima: Nagaland Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar has visited the site of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded project for development of solid waste management facility at Lerie here. According to official sources today, during the visit of Mr Kumar, State Investment Programme & Monitoring Implementation Unit (SIPMIU) Programme Director Khupi Natso informed Mr Kumar that the project is expected to be completed by this month. The SIPMIU, as the implementing agency will become a model as the first self-sustainable plant in the country, thereby turning waste to wealth. He informed that among the others, this facility will feature compost plant, scientific sanitary landfill, waste recycling centre. The plant is expected to collect 57 tons of waste daily. Under the ADB assisted North Eastern Region Urban Development Programme (NERUDP), infrastructure improvements in water supply and solid waste management has been taken up for Nagaland’s capital Kohima. The expected long-term impact of the project is to improve environment and well-being of the urban residents through sustainable and increased access to better urban services. (UNI)

The Mileage magazine to celebrate a year of its inception
GUWAHATI: On the occasion of one successful year of The Mileage, a monthly news magazine,  an event titled Enkindle 2015, will be organized on 7th of June, 2015 at District Library, Guwahati. It would be a daylong program featuring seminar in which prominent journalists and academicians from the media fraternity and academic institutions would be speaking on the topic, “Media trial: Is the civic In the.  There would be a mobile film contest, a literary pre-event contest. This segment is categorized into three parts – essay/short story writing competition. Moreover, a drama would be performed by a group named BODHI, which is headed by Anup Jyoti Kuch. The event would be concluded with a cultural programe where upcoming artists like, Kashmiri Pathak, Rahul  Sinha, Bhaktimala Choudhury and others will perform. Till now Assamese film actors Kapil Bora and Chetana Das have confirmed their presence on the venue to grace the event.

KU stresses on quality education for holistic student development
JORHAT:   A three-day national conference on “Challenges of Development of Higher Education through public and private initiatives”, concluded at the Kaziranga University in Assam’s Jorhat last week. The theme of the conference was Challenges of Development of Higher Education through public and private initiatives—the conference discussed at length on various emerging areas of higher education including the challenges of achieving equity, inclusiveness and excellence through based credit system, fusion between Western and indigenous knowledge, the values and thought processes and factors of development of higher education to name a few.  Kaziranga University also felt that there is a need to restructure the higher education system in the country through the implementation of Choice Based Credit System and for greater autonomy to institutions of higher education. Chancellor of the University, Shri, MD  Khetan inaugurated the conference at the University. The conference, which was organized in collaboration with Indian Colleges Forum, Society for Education and Economic Development (SEED) and Assam College Principals’ Council, witnessed participation from over 100 heads of institutions and college principals from different parts of the country and even from abroad. Among the high profile dignitaries, who participated in the conference included Dr. Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor, Guwahati University, Prof. (Dr.) VM Salokhe, Vice Chancellor, Kaziranga University, Prof. M.M Pant, Pro Vice Chancellor, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Dr. B.K.Tyagi, Secretary, ICF , Dr. Bolendra Kumar Das, President, ACPC, Dr Budhin Gogoi, Vice President, ACPC .

Nagaland Lok Adalat settles 63 cases
Kohima: The Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA) has organised Lok Adalat, where 63 cases relating to Motor Accident Claims (MAC) were settled. A statement issued by DDLSA on Sunday informed that Neiko Kanuo, District and Sessions Judge, Dimapur, who is also the Chairman of the DDLSA, inaugurated the Lok Adalat. Cases amounting to a total of Rs 1,47,60,000 were settled at the Lok Adalat, thereby avoiding protracted legal proceedings in respect of the claims. Lok Adalats are an alternative dispute resolution mechanism which provide speedy disposal of cases where parties settle disputes primarily through mutual agreement. The DDLSA has held a number of such Lok Adalats, where several cases have been successfully settled. The next Lok Adalat to be held on July 11 will deal with cases pertaining to Electricity, Water, Telephone and Public Utility disputes. (UNI)

Hohos stand united against violence
Kohima: The Kohima based 13 tribal Hohos have reaffirmed to stand united against all forms of violence and all other elements that disturb peaceful co-existence in Kohima city. In a statement, Angami Public Organization (APO) President Vilhousa Seleyi and General Secretary Keviselie Lhousa said the meeting deliberated on the recent violence and anti-social activities and resolved to endorse full support to the Government of Nagaland in its effort to contain violence. The meeting also suggested that the Government should compensate reasonably to all victims of such violence. (UNI)
