SHILLONG: A long cherished dream of Mawlai residents is finally set to become a reality as the ‘artificial turf’ at the community playground ‘Madan Heh’, would be inaugurated on Thursday.
The State Government had promised artificial turf at Madan Heh three years back and the promise has finally been fulfilled.
The new playground would be officially opened at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, by the Officials of the Government and Sports Department of Meghalaya. Prominent personalities of Mawlai including former MLAs and Ministers are also expected at the function.
The Madan Heh playground was the fruit of labours of the founding fathers of Mawlai Sports Club, notably Sati Raja, the thence Syiem of Mylliem Syiemship and Sheringham A. Chyne, Secretary of the Mawlai Athletics Club, the precursor of Mawlai Sports Club.
The ground was a Fire-line of the Forest Department and it was given on lease at that time at the rate of Rs. 1 annually. From this humble beginning in 1923, the Madan Heh can now boast of being the first community playground in the State to be laid by artificial turf.
