7 yrs jail to 3 for robbing

New Delhi:  A Delhi court has awarded seven years imprisonment each to three persons for trespassing into a jewellery shop and robbing a man of Rs 30,000 at gun point in 2013. Additional Sessions Judge Paramjit Singh awarded the jail term to Hari Om, Arvind and Bhupender, all residents of Uttar Pradesh, who had robbed Harish Kumar Sharma of Rs 30,000 in his shop. “Keeping in view the fact and circumstances of the present case and having regard to the nature and gravity of offence, I am of the considered opinion that convicts are not entitled to any leniency. However, in view of the family circumstances of the convicts, in my considered opinion, imposition of minimum sentence prescribed thereof shall meet the ends of justice in this case,” the court said. It awarded seven years imprisonment to the accused persons for various offences under IPC including house trespass and robbery and also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on each of them. According to the prosecution, on November 16, 2013, all three committed trespass in the shop after and restrained the complainant and robbed him of Rs 30,000. While committing robbery, the three accused persons showed country-made revolver to the victim. While Hari Om and Bhupender managed to flee, Arvind was apprehended at the spot by the public present there and an FIR was registered in this regard. Later on, the other two accused were also arrested. During the trial, the three men had claimed that they were innocent and were falsely implicated in the case. (PTI)

SC allows rowing Olympian to take up umpires’ exam

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed India’s first rowing Olympian and Arjuna awardee Subedar Inderpal Singh, facing a two-year ban, to appear in the upcoming examinations for selection of umpires for the water sport. A vacation bench of Justices A K Sikri and U U Lalit also asked the Andhra Pradesh High Court to “expeditiously” decide the plea of Singh against his two-year ban by the Rowing Federation of India (RFI). During the brief hearing, the counsel for the Olympian said the delay would render his plea “infructuous” in the high court. “The best thing, on the part of the High court, would have been to decide the plea,” the bench said while disposing it. Singh was a coach of the Services Sports Control Board team for the national rowing championship in February last year. The sportsperson, in his plea, had alleged rampant irregularities in the functioning of the RFI, which he claimed was being controlled by a politician’s family for nearly three decades. He had claimed he was being victimised for complaining forcefully to the jury that the organisers were not following rules and regulations. The jury, instead of looking into his complaint, arbitrarily slapped him with a two-year ban, he alleged and sought relief from the apex court. Singh claimed he was targeted because he had earned the wrath of the politician’s family which has controlled the RFI for the last three decades. (PTI)

Forest department take steps to protect peafowls in Indore

Indore: In view of the rising mercury in Madhya Pradesh, officials of forest department have initiated steps to protect peafowls. “We have identified the habitat of peafowl in 24 clusters in Indore region and made arrangements to provide water and fodder to the bird in case of need,” Divisional Forest Officer A K Joshi told PTI. He said, this time around water sources and fodder were in abundance due to the last year’s bountiful monsoon in the region. However, the officer said that with extreme hot conditions for last four days, the department is keeping a hawk’s eye on peafowls. Indore is home to nearly 10,000 peafowls. According to wild life experts, shortage of water and fodder crops during the summers pose threat to them. Joshi said that the peacocks and peahens stray into human settlement in rural area from forested areas and end up eating up worms and reptiles killed by sprinkling of pesticide in fields. (PTI)
