Two poachers arrested in Assam

Morigaon (Assam): Two poachers, suspected to be involved in elephant poaching, were on Tuesday arrested in Morigaon district. They were planning to poach a rhino at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and were allegedly involved in elephant poaching in Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary recently, a police officer said. Acting on a tip off, police and forest protection staff arrested them from a house in Mayong area near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary early this morning. The duo have been identified as Sirajul Islam and Genggu Ali, he said. A rifle and bullets were recovered from their possession, he said. (PTI)

Man held with heroin

Aizawl: One person was arrested with ten grams of heroin by the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department, its spokesman Peter Zohmingthanga said on Tuesday. Hrangtawna (39) was arrested for carrying the contraband, smuggled from Myanmar, last night and remanded to judicial custody, he said. In another incident the Anti Narcotic Squad seized 2.3 lakh tablets of Pseudo-ephedrine at Khatla locality in Aizawl on Sunday and arrested Lalthuama (47), he said. The seized drug, worth Rs 9.2 lakh, was planned to be smuggled to Myanmar, he said. (PTI)

Nine arrested for hijacking truck

Tinsukia (Assam): Nine persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the hijacking of a truck,carrying cosmetics worth Rs 66 lakh, near Assam-West Bengal border, police said on Tuesday. The truck, carrying cosmetics of a reputed private company, was hijacked by a gang of dacoits when the vehicle was on its way to Kolkata from a plant in Doomdooma town about 20 days ago, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police A P Tiwari said. The nine members were arrested from Dhubri, Gossaigaon and Nagaoan in Assam, Asansol in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh in the pas few days, he said. The police also recovered the truck. (PTI)

Two children drowned in pond

Rangiya (Assam): A five-year-old girl and her 4-year-old friend drowned when they slipped into a pond at Dekachang in Kamrup (Rural) district on Tuesday, police said. Shahida Khatoon (5) and Mohibul Haque (4) fell into the pond while they were playing near the the water body, a police official said. Both the boy and girl were neighbours, he said. (PTI)

Life imprisonment for killing sister-in-law

Rangiya (Assam): A person has been awarded rigorous life imprisonment for killing his sister-in-law 22 years ago. District and Sessions Judge Dibyajyoti Mahanta also imposed a fine of 1,000 on Mohibul Haque Ahmed for killing his brother’s wife Fatima Bibi in April, 1993. Ahmed had attacked Bibi with an axe following a family dispute and she succumbed to her injuries the next day at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital. He was arrested and subsequently secured bail but was taken into custody again on Tuesday. (PTI)
