Passenger train derails in Assam, 4 injured

Guwahati:  Four persons were injured when five coaches and the engine of the Alipurduar-Guwahati Sifung passenger train jumped the track in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Saturday.
The derailment occurred on a bridge between Salakati and Basugaon stations at about 5.15 A.M., spokesman for the North Eastern Frontier Railway, Pranav Jyoti Sharma, said.
The motorman and the assistant driver of the train are among the four persons who picked up minor injuries in the mishap and have been admitted to hospital.
A relief train was immediately rushed to the site bearing the necessary help, including medical aid.
Senior railway officials from the railway headquarters, Alipurduar Division and New Bongaigaon have reached the site to lead the restoration work.
The derailment affected running of trains on the up line and some passenger trains were cancelled, the spokesman said.
The cancelled passenger trains are New Jalpaiguri- Dekargaon passenger, Fakiragram-Kamakhya passenger, New Jalpaiguri-New Coochbehar Special, Dhubri-Fakiragram passenger, Guwahati-Alipurduar junction Passenger, Kamakhya- Fakiragram passenger, Silghat-Dhubri Rajyarani Express.
New Coochbehar-New Jalpaiguri special and Kamakhya-Alipurduar Intercity Express.
Sunday’s Fakiragram-Dhubri passenger, too, has been cancelled, added the North Eastern Frontier Railway spokesman.
All the passengers of the train coming from Alipurduar in Bengal to Guwahati were transhipped from the accident site, Sarma said.
While the engine driver was admitted to hospital, the passengers with minor injuries were given first aid, the spokesman said.(PTI)
