New Delhi: Defying his own hospital’s report, which showed complications in one of the kidneys of a six-year-old girl, a doctor at AIIMS allegedly removed both the kidneys and later claimed that the patient had just one. The hospital has denied having knowledge of the incident.
Deepika, a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, had clear reports from a local health centre as well as the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) showing that she had complications in her left kidney while the right one was functioning well.
Copies of the reports that are with IANS confirm the girl’s claim.
The first test report of AIIMS dated December 8 last year says: “There is a large photopenia noted left renal fossa which does not show any tracer accumulation in early as well as delayed static images while the right kidney appears normal in size, shape and function.”
Following the reports, a senior surgeon of the paediatrics department who was handling the case informed the parents that due to the complication in the left kidney, he will have to remove it, to which the parents agreed.
However, after the surgery on March 14, the doctor informed the parents that he had to remove both the kidneys due to some complications.
When the parents objected and threatened to file a police complaint for taking out both the kidneys without their consent, the doctor contradicted his own statement and said their daughter had just one kidney.
Even the test report after the surgery dated March 17 says: “Bilateral kidneys not visualised in renal fossa or in ectopic location.”
Asked what exactly the final test report meant, a doctor who did not wish to be named told IANS that both the kidneys were not visible after the test.
AIIMS, however, denied having knowledge of the incident, while the concerned doctor was unavailable for comment.
“I seriously don’t know anything about the incident. I will inquire,” AIIMS director M.C. Misra said. (IANS)
