SHILLONG: The Ri- Bhoi police chief has denied that police was involved in compromising a rape case as alleged by the family of the minor victim.
Reacting to a news report quoting the family that police allegedly sided with the rape accused, the Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, G Kharwanlang said on Sunday that the accused had been arrested from South West Khasi Hills after the incident.
Earlier, the family alleged that police had tried to convince the mother of the 12-year-old rape victim from Umran Dairy to compromise with the accused identified as Victorious Ranee of Marngar village in West Khasi Hills and withdraw the complaint.  However, denying these allegations, the SP said, “As soon as the police received information, immediate action was taken to register a case and quick action was made to arrest the accused but he had absconded”.
Police, however, pursued his whereabouts and after much effort, he was traced within four days from a remote area of Borsora, South West Khasi Hills and subsequently arrested by a police team from Ri-Bhoi.
“None of the policemen were involved in trying to compromise the case as it was immediately registered on receipt of FIR and police cannot compromise any case which had been registered and sent to court,” the SP added.
