SHILLONG: Irked with the problem of growing influx in Meghalaya, the A’chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) has sent a petition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over the same.
In the memorandum, the AIJIF said the government has sanctioned many Border out Posts (BOPs) as well as fencing on the Indo-Bangla border areas to check infiltration. However influx has been increasing with each passing day despite continued efforts by civil bodies.
AIJIF said influx from neighbouring areas has led to ethnic conflicts over land and fights for political autonomy. Several political and armed insurgent groups have been formed.
“This has often led to clashes between the local population and the immigrants, causing serious law and order problems in states like Meghalaya as well as other North Eastern States,” it said, adding that most of the plain belt areas of Garo Hills  is under threat due to influx. AIJIF also demanded early completion of border fencing to check the flow of migrants.
