Five cities bid for 2024 Summer Olympics
Geneva: The International Olympic Committee on Wednesday confirmed Budapest (Hungary), Hamburg (Germany), Los Angeles (United States), Paris (France) and Rome (Italy) as the candidates for the 2024 Olympic Games. IOC president Thomas Bach said there were five “outstanding cities” in the race for the Summer Games, reports Xinhua. “We are welcoming five outstanding and highly qualified candidate cities,” said Bach in a statement. “Olympic Agenda 2020 has shaped the candidature process more as an invitation and the cities have responded by engaging with the IOC through dialogue and cooperation.” “In the new invitation process, the IOC learnt that all the candidates are embracing Olympic Agenda 2020 from their respective vision for the future of their city. Sustainability and legacy are the cornerstones of each candidature,” he added. The IOC will select the host city at its session in Peru in 2017. (IANS)
T20s and ODIs squads to be picked in Bengaluru on Sep 20
New Delhi: The Indian squad for the three T20 Internationals and five ODIs for the upcoming series against South Africa will be announced in Bengaluru on Sunday, September 20. Meanwhile it was also announced that a Borad President’s XI team will take on South Africans in the warm-up T20 game at the Airforce Ground in Palam on September 29. “The meeting of the All-India Senior Selection Committee of the BCCI will be held on Sunday, the 20th of September 2015, at 12 PM at Hotel JW Marriot (UB City), Bengaluru, to select the Indian teams for the upcoming T20 Internationals (three matches) and One Day Internationals (Five matches) against South Africa,” BCCI release stated. “The committee will also select the Board President’s XI team to play the only T20 practice match against South Africa at Palam Cricket Ground, Delhi on 29th September 2015,” the release added. As is the norm in the current regime, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur and chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil will address the media after the selection committee meeting is over. (PTI)
NEHU Inter college basketball tournament
SHILLONG: On day 1 of NEHU Inter college basketball tournament 2015 (men’s category), Shillong college defeated Umshyrpi college by 46/10, Synod college defeated Raid laban college by 49/10, K. L. Bajoria defeated NEHU by 44/40, Nongstoin college defeated St. Dominic college by 42/37 while Mawlai Presbyterian college got a walk over against Seng Khasi college. In the women’s category, Women’s college defeated Umshyrpi college by 12/11, St. Edmunds got a walk over against Synod college, Shillong college defeated St. Dominics college by 26/7 whereas UCC got a walk over against Nongstoin college.
SCA general body meeting on Sept 19
SHILLONG: The General Body Meeting of Shillong Cricket Association will be held on the September 19 at 2 pm at Arts and Culture Hall, U Soso Tham Auditorium. Two representatives of all affiliated clubs are invited to attend the meeting. The members are also requested to collect the ‘ SCA Reports’ from the office on Friday during office hours.
All Indio Radio to broadcast live commentary of Davis Cup
New Delhi: The All India Radio will broadcast live commentary in both Hindi and English of the upcoming Davis Cup World Group Play-off match between India and the Czech Republic starting on Friday, September 18. On the first day of the opening singles, the broadcast will start at 9:55 am in the morning while on the second day, it would start at 11:55 am and again on 9:55 am on the final day. The AIR will broadcast the running commentary on the national hook-up. All multi-channel air stations will relay the live commentary on one of their primary channels. (PTI)
