Hawkers’ association expresses concern over eviction drives in city

SHILLONG: The Shillong Roadside Hawkers Association has expressed reservations against the ongoing drive to evict hawkers in the city.  The working president of the association, EH Chen said that the Meghalaya Street Vendors Act was passed by the Assembly for the protection of livelihood and regulation of street vending. However, the ongoing eviction drives were against the principles of the Act.
The Association further said that the Deputy Commissioner is the local authority to earmark space for vendors in due consultation with the planning authority to settle the problem of hawkers.
