Implementing building byelaws outside MUDA’s jurisdiction
SHILLONG: The State Government on Thursday assured the House that a new agency will be set up to deal with the building byelaws in areas outside the jurisdiction of MUDA even as Mawlai legislator Embhalang Syiemlieh asked the Government to withdraw the notification of MUDA extending the building byelaws to Mawlai.
During the question hour, Syiemlieh reiterated his opposition to the MUDA notification covering Mawlai.
However, Urban and Municipal Affairs Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh stressed on the need for ensuring proper building byelaws citing the case of death of two women and grave injury to a child due to the collapse of a wall at Lamavilla here on Wednesday.
In response, Syiemlieh pointed out that the area was very much under the jurisdiction of MUDA and it was the lack of enforcement of law that resulted in the mishap.
Ardent Basaiawmoit (HSPDP) suggested that there is a need to sensitize the headmen and others about the various aspects related to building byelaws for better clarity. Jemino Mawthoh (UDP) also wanted the state government to have clarity on the criteria of selecting areas which will come under the purview of MUDA.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that a department will be assigned to take care of the creation of the new agency to deal with areas outside the jurisdiction of MUDA.
