Eight held for conducting illegal inspection

SHILLONG: City police on Tuesday arrested eight members, including two women, of a local organization calling itself the United Hynniewtrep Movement (UHM) for allegedly conducting inspection in tea stalls and restaurants without prior permission from the concerned authorities.
Police said that the eight volunteers of United Hynniewtrep Movement who were arrested included its president Gilbert Dkhar and other members – Brian Majer Dkhar Kyrshanbor Lyngdoh, Kyntiew B Rynjah, Duggel R Kharsohnoh, Feroz Lyngdoh, Naphisha Kurkalang and Bari Khongthaw.
The eight members of UHM were conducting inspection in tea stalls from Lumdiengjri to Police Bazar area without any permission or authority.
The eight were arrested from Jail Road area in the city following complaints from shop owners.
All of them were later forwarded to the court.
AMEF blames ex-cadres for crimes in Garo Hills

TURA: The A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) has revealed the names of some of its deserters who are allegedly involved in kidnappings and extortion in Garo Hills. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the outfit blamed its deserters including those of the GNLA as responsible for perpetrating majority of the crimes in the region.
According to the ‘Northern Area Commander’ of the outfit, Walmesil Matgrik, some of its former cadres who are involved in the crimes included Basrang M Sangma alias Asilang from Hatimarini village, Niksrang Ch Marak alias Rarik from Lower Sambrak, Sengrak Marak alias Saljatchi from Rimrangpara Gagagre, Chiseng Sangma alias Guare from Lower Sambrak and Beltush Sangma from Rongmatchu village.
KSU hails NEHU V-C appointment

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union has welcomed the appointment of Prof S.K. Srivastava as the new Vice-Chancellor of NEHU.
“We are extremely happy that after a long wait the University has got a full-fledged V-C,” the KSU central body and the KSU Delhi unit said on Tuesday.
The Union claimed that it had been closely following the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Centre after there was a delay in the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor following the resignation of Prof. A.N. Rai on June, 2013.
The KSU also stated that NEHU had functioned under an acting V-C for more than two years.
“We would like to express our gratitude to the two MPs – Vincent H Pala and Wansuk Syiem – for continuously pursuing the matter,” the KSU said.
Mob assault claims one

SHILLONG: Residents of Mynsngat village in West Jaintia Hills on Sunday evening apprehended and assaulted one person causing injuries to him and later he succumbed to his injuries.
Police said that the victim Ning Dhar (45) was shifted to Jowai Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police said they were investigating into the matter. No one has been arrested so far in this connection.
Air Fest in city on Oct 3-4

Shillong: To commemorate the 83rd Anniversary of the Indian Air Force, the Air Festival 2015 will be held at the ALG at Upper Shillong on October 3-4. The Fest will be open to all for free from 10 am to 4 pm.
Activities like fly past, aero modeling, static display of aircraft, slithering operation of the IAF Special Force ‘Garud’ and performance by the Air Force Band will be the main highlights of the event. Food stalls would also be put up on the occasion.
