SHILLONG: After the civic authorities have evicted hawkers and vendors from Police Bazaar and the footpath near Civil Hospital, they seem to have resurfaced. Rain doesn’t seem to stop these vendors from going about daily business, as vegetable vendors were seen near the OB Shopping Mall in Police Bazaar.
The recent crackdown in the number of illegal vendors came as a relief for the public but it was short-lived as the vendors returned to their usual business, disrupting traffic and pedestrians.
The return of the vendors has made the authorities an object of mockery as in one hand the municipality cleanses encroachments in public roads and on the other hand the encroaching vendors, hawkers regroups themselves in no time. And this raises a vital question about the abilities of the municipal authorities. This indicates the inability of the authority to put control over the illegal vendors and liquor sellers.
