CBI arrests MES personnel for taking bribe for recruitment
Tezpur/Guwahati: A Military Engineering Service Upper Division Clerk (UDC) was arrested by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team from Tezpur last night for allegedly taking bribe for recruitment of a candidate in the Military Engineering Services (MES), CBI officers said on Wednesday. Based on a complaint by a candidate that the UDC had asked for a bribe for recruitment in the MES, the CBI team from Guwahati arrested the clerk red-handed when he was taking Rs 15,000 from the candidate at his Komarchuburi residence under Tezpur police station, the officers said. After being brought to Guwahati, the arrested person was today produced at the Special CBI Court, which remanded him to three days custody of the central investigation agency. The CBI officers also seized some documents from the arrested person identified as Lakhan Bhuyan, working at the Garrison Engineer office under the MES at Solmara, they said. Sonitpur district Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar said the CBI team had informed the police about the arrest of the MES personnel. Last year on October 14, a ten-member CBI team had raided the office of the Garrison Engineer at Solmara Air Force station and nabbed an engineer red-handed when he was taking a huge amount of money as bribe and some chemicals from a contractor. Armed militants attack police station in Assam

Guwahati: Unidentified armed militants launched attacked on a police station in eastern most Assam bordering Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday evening using sophisticated weapons and rocket propelled grenades (RPGs), a police source said here. There was, however, no casualty due to the attack.Police said a group of four-five militants dressed in camouflage fatigue opened fire on the Kakopathar police station in Tinsukia district from an adjoining ATM at around 8 P.M. The militants also fired a RPG which did not explode.The militants fled when police personnel from the police station retaliated the firing. Police and the Army have launched a combing operation in the area to search for the militants and said an operation has been launched in search of the militants as well as possible ambushes set up by militants.Though no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack , police suspect involvement of ULFA(Independent)-NSCN-K or Maoists in the attack that was carried out on the eve of Assam Police day on Thursday.
Keshari Nath Tripathi sworn in as Tripura Governor
Agartala: Keshari Nath Tripathi, the incumbent Governor of West Bengal, on Wednesday took oath of office of the Governor of Tripura as additional charge. Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court Deepak Gupta administered him the oath of office and secrecy at the darbar hall of the Raj Bhavan here. Tripathi said he would serve for development of the state during his stint and that he had came to Tripura for the first time. Tripathi would return to Kolkata tomorrow. Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy is on leave for a month and would return on the third of November next. (PTI)
