Shillong/ Jowai/ Tura: Along with the rest of the world, the International Day of Older Persons was observed in several parts of the State on Friday.
The District Social Welfare Officer, Shillong organised a function at Mawkdok Community Hall, Mawkdok on the theme “Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in the Urban Environment” to mark the occasion. MLA, Sohra Constituency, T. Chyne attended the programme as the chief guest in the presence of District Social Welfare Officer, K. Marbaniang, Sardar Elaka Laitlyngkot, A. Shabong, CDPO, Laitkroh ICDS, Project, E. Kharshandi among others.
Speaking on the occasion, Chyne said that older persons can always serve as a guiding force and source of inspiration for the young and the new generations in their day to day strides.
As part of the programme, more than 100 senior citizens of Laitkroh C&RD block benefited from the free Medical Health Check-up Camp conducted by the District Medical Health Officer, East Khasi Hills and State Resource Centre, Civil Hospital, Shillong.
Three eldest citizens of Laitkroh C&RD Block, Hian Nongsteng aged 103 years, from Laitlyngkot village, Khmew Khongsit aged 98 years, from Kongthong village and Berisil Nongrum aged 100 years, from Laitmawsiang village were honoured and presented with gift hampers by the chief guest. All the senior citizens who attended the programme were also presented with gifts.
In Shanpung,District Social Welfare Officer in collaboration with Dorbar Shnong, Shanpung Pohshnong and Shangpung Mission celebrated the International Day of the Older Person at Rev. Anthony Crocket Memorial Hall, Shangpung Mission, in which KM Lytan, Local MDC attended the program as the Chief Guest. As a token of love and respect gifts were presented to all 152 Senior Citizens present.
The programme was presided over by the Chairman Shnong Shangpung Mission, PH Wann. Free medical check-up and medicines were also distributed by the office of District Medical & Health Officer, Jowai to all senior citizens.
In Salmanpara, South West Garo Hills, a function to mark the day was organized by the district social welfare office, Ampati, where nearly 300 senior citizens were presented with gifts. Two oldest citizens of the district, one male and one female, were also felicitated on the occasion. Executive Secretary of A’chik Baptist Krima VI, Rev. I. A. Sangma was the chief guest on the occasion.
