Traditional heads to organise public procession on Oct 30

SHILLONG: The Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SKNSKBH) will organise a public procession in the city on October 30 to express its opposition to the move of the State Government to create division among the Khasi-Jaintia indigenous community.
“We urge the various Hima, Raid and Dorbar in Khasi-Jaintia Hills to come forward to participate in the public procession to show their solidarity,” Blah said, adding that they will hold meetings in various district headquarters prior to the public procession to create awareness among the people on the various issues that the Synjuk had been raising.
The Synjuk also reiterated its opposition to a State Government proposal of come up with a fresh draft bill to empower traditional institutions in the State and at the same time has asked the State Cabinet ministers to step down for failing to raise their voice on issues affecting the common people.   “We are against this fresh move of the State Government to disrupt the prevailing customs and traditions of the indigenous people. We will preserve our customs and traditions at all costs,” SKNSKBH general secretary R.L. Blah said in a statement, while informing about the resolutions of the Executive Committee meeting of the Synjuk held here on Thursday.
The Synjuk also committed to continue to support the two Autonomous District Councils (KHADC and JHADC) in their fight for the interests of the indigenous communities.
“We also demand that the two bills passed by the KHADC and JHADC should get the assent of the Governor at the earliest,” Blah said.
