SHILLONG: The HSPDP is undecided on the name of the successor of its late founder president Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, who breathed his last on September 26.
Among the front runners for the post of HSPDP chief are vice president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, West Khasi Hills party president, K.P. Pangngiang, West Khasi Hills party general secretary, L.G. Nongsiej and party joint secretary, Witting Mawsor.
Sources on Friday informed that the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) is scheduled to meet on October 6 to decide on the new leader who will lead the party to the 2018 Assembly elections.
According to sources, the CEC would be proposing the name of the new leader during the General Council meeting to be held in Shillong on October 23.
“Things would be clearer after the CEC meeting on Tuesday,” sources said.
Party sources also informed of the consensus among the top leaders of the party including the vice president (Ardent) that the post of president should go to the leader who is acceptable to all.
Party sources also revealed that neither Pangniang nor Nongsiej are keen on taking over the responsibility since they have already indicated that they would like to concentrate on the growth of the party in West Khasi Hills, especially after the demise of the party supremo.
According to party sources, majority of the leaders in West Khasi Hills have already made it clear that they have no problems in having a president from any other district of the State as long as he is able to establish the party in Ri-Bhoi and Jaintia Hills where the HSPDP has almost negligent presence.
According to sources, the party leaders are aiming for a young and dynamic leader who can lead the party to new heights.
The sources further revealed that the party leadership in West Khasi Hills has already initiated the process of selecting a suitable candidate to contest the bye-election for Nongstoin constituency.
The sources also indicated that the general secretary of the West Khasi Hills unit, L.G. Nongsiej, who is an MDC from Nongstoin constituency, is in all probability going to contest the by-election to be announced by the Election Commission of India.
