Guwahati: In what construed as a move to woo voters among tea workers ahead of the next Assembly polls, the Congress government in Assam government inaugurated 25 Nutrition Shops across the state as a special project under Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission Society (ASRLMS) on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on FridayBranded as Bagan Bazars these nutrition shops located in various tea estates in the state is part of Assam government’s approach to improve the health condition of the people residing in the tea gardens.
These shops are of uniform size and design. The ASRLMS has initiated the establishment of these nutrition shops within the tea garden premises, in collaboration with Tea Tribes Welfare Department, Food & Civil Supplies Department and Assam Gramin Vikash Bank (AGVB) and in coordination with various tea garden associations.
The main objectives of the concept are to reduce the level of Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and to improve the general health condition of the tea workers community, especially women and adolescent girls.
These Shops will be run by selected National Rural Livelihoods Mission compliant Self Help Groups (SHGs) and will be equipped with nutritional food items, grocery items etc. These shops will provide nutritious food items in garden areas at a reasonable rate as well as serve as a platform for selling of SHG products.
