SHILLONG: The State Government is planning to handover the housing project at Mawprem to the local Dorbar Shnong in November.
Indicating this here on Saturday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh informed that the project was almost complete.
She said that the housing project at Lower Mawprem will have 48 dwelling units in 9,900 square feet with necessary infrastructure and added that the project was taken up under integrated slum development project for urban poor at an initial estimated cost of Rs 1.77 crore.
The foundation of the housing project was laid by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on November 19, 2011.
Interestingly, even after one year of the laying of the foundation, the project did not take off due to some reasons.
According to her, one of the major reasons is the failure of the Hindustan Prefab Limited (HPL) to implement the project.
“The Government had to look for a new option after the HPL was withdrawn from the project. We then handed over the project MUDA,” Ampareen said.
The local Dorbar Shnong will select the beneficiaries of the housing units.
“We have already briefed them about prescribed guidelines laid down by the Centre for selection of the beneficiaries. We have also urged the local Dorbar to strictly comply with the prescribed deadlines during the selection of the beneficiaries,” she added.
Earlier, Urban Affairs Minister had informed that the detailed project report was prepared after the land measuring 9,900 square feet belonging to a private owner was identified and a tripartite agreement was signed in December, 2008 by the landowner, Dorbar Shnong and MUDA.
“After various issues put up by the landowner, negotiations were again taken up with him in 2011 and the government had agreed to pay the owner the re-assessed cost of land and accordingly acquisition was processed and land was taken over again in November 2011,” Ampareen added.
