Sushma thanks PM for ‘inspirational’ message
New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “inspirational” message, a day after Modi praised her for “wonderfully” highlighting India’s contribution to the UN. In tweets, Swaraj also said that she was back from New York and would be travelling to poll-bound Bihar on Sunday. “Thank you Prime Minister for your words of inspiration,” she tweeted. Modi had on Friday praised Swaraj for “wonderfully” highlighting India’s contribution to the UN during her speech at the UN General Assembly. “Just spoke to @SushmaSwaraj ji & congratulated her for the excellent speech at the @UN. A perfect articulation of key global issues,” Modi had said in a tweet. Apart from taking on Pakistan, asking it to shun terror to have dialogue with India, Swaraj also spoke about key issues including India’s initiative on climate change and urgent need for UN Security Council reforms. “Back from New York. I’m in Bihar tomorrow,” Swaraj said in another tweet on Saturday. (PTI)
Fishermen demand tracing of missing mate, begin stir
Rameswaram: Fishermen here on Saturday began an indefinite strike demanding that the Union Government trace a missing fisherman from the state, who fell into the sea, after the boat in which he was sailing sank while allegedly being chased by a Sri Lankan naval vessel. Local fishermen association president Emerit and another functionary Sagayaraj said 700 fishing boats did not put to sea today. In the incident on September 27, four fishermen fell into water after their boat sank on being allegdly chased off Katchatheevu by the Lankan Navy. Three fishermen were rescued and taken to Thalaimannar while one was missing after the incident, they said. The three fishermen subsequently returned due to the Centre’s efforts but the missing one was yet to be traced, they said. The fishermen wanted the Centre to trace him and bring him back to India, they said, adding, till then, they would not venture into the sea. (PTI)
Constable killed in road accident in UP
Sultanpur (UP): A police constable was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on Lucknow-Varanasi road late o Fiday night, police said on Saturday. Nakul Yadav (45), posted at City Kotwali police station, had gone out for some official work when he met with the accident in front of central school, Amhat, they said. The locals rushed him to the district hospital where he was declared brought dead, police said, adding that a case has been registered and investigations are on. (PTI)
Lightning strike kills six
Suri (WB): Six persons were killed in lightning strike in three places of Birbhum district on  Friday evening. Seikh Aktar (32), Seikh Sabir (42) and Seikh Abraj (34) were killed as lightning struck them when they were working in a quarry at Bahdurpur village under Nalhati police station area, police said. 13-year-old Dashami Let of Ebai village under Nalhati police station area was struck by lightning when she was going home, police said. At Saithia, Dhalu Murdi (48) and Matal Murdi (55) were also killed in lightning strike. (PTI)
Minor girl rescued from policewoman’s house
Thane: A 15-year-old girl from Karnataka who was made to work as a domestic help by a policewoman here was rescued by the Child Protection Unit of Thane police and the employer arrested. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bharat Shelke who acted on a complaint from an NGO about the minor girl being kept a RPF constable, attached to Kalyan Railway police, as a house maid, raided the cop’s premises on Thursday and rescued the girl. According to police, the girl, fed up with constant harassment by her step mother ran away from her residence in Gulbarga and landed at Kalyan station here where the woman constable, Indu Kelkar (35) spotted her and took her home. The teenager had requested the constable not to inform her parents following which the policewoman allegedly made the girl to clean utensils, mop floor and also cook at times besides assigning her other domestic work, they added.  (PTI)
Toddler dies after falling in tub in UP
Meerut: A toddler died after slipping into a tub while trying to take out a biscuit that had fallen into it in Kharkhoda area here, police said on Saturday. One-and-a-half-year-old Riza crawled into the bathroom while playing with her 3-year-old brother on Friday. The girl leaned on the tub to take out a biscuit that had fallen in it, they said She fell into the tub while attempting to pick-up the biscuit, they said, adding that her parents were not at home when the incident occurred. They said that when his wife Yasmeen came back after two hours, she found their daughter’s body in the tub. Family members have buried the toddler’s body, police further said. (PTI)
