Two including army jawan killed in road mishap
Ballia: An army jawan and another person were killed when the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a truck here, police said today. The jawan, Bhagwan Pal (27), and Rajan Yadav (17), riding pillon, were hit by a speeding truck near Dharni turn on Bairiya-Ballia road. They were killed on the spot. The truck driver fled from the scene, police said, adding that efforts were being made to arrest him. Bhagwan Pal, posted in Jammu, was on a visit to his native village here, they said. (PTI)
Fire in central police organisation building in CGO
New Delhi:Fire engulfed a building complex housing offices of central police organisations in CGO complex here. Fire officials said seven fire tenders have been rushed to Block no. 4 inside the CGO complex in Lodhi road after a call was received by them at 12:17 AM. “The fire is suspected to be emanating from the first floor of the building which houses central police organisations like BPRD, BSF, ITBP and CBI’s CFSL. The building has been evacuated,” a senior official said. They said once the fire is completely doused, the exact estimate of the damage could be ascertained. (PTI)
Six sentenced for life in murder case in Haryana
Hisar: Six persons, including four brothers, were sentenced for life by a court here for murdering a man in the district nearly two years ago. Additional District and Sessions Judge Hisar, Purushotam Dass yesterday awarded life imprisonment to Kuldeep, Dholia, Madan and Sunder (all brothers) and Himmat Singh and Shamsher, all residents of village Mangali after finding them guilty of murdering Nafe Singh over a dispute. The convicts were also asked to pay a fine of Rs 51,000 each. The court also awarded one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 under Section 148 (rioting) and one month imprisonment and fine of Rs 500 under section 341 (wrongfully confining any person) of IPC to them. All sentences will run concurrently. 60-year-old Nafe Singh was assaulted with iron rods and died in a hospital on December 17, 2013. (PTI)
4-year-old child kidnapped from Anganwadi centre in Punjab
Faridkot: A 4-year-old boy was allegedly kidnapped from an Anganwadi centre here, police said on Tuesday. The incident came to light when parents of Yuvraj Singh, resident of Jaitu town here, came to the day care centre to take him home yesterday. A worker at the centre told them that a man who identified himself as their relative took the boy along with him. He told the workers that the boy’s parents could not come as they had to attend a function somewhere, police said. Police said teams have been dispatched to trace the child. (PTI)
Free meal facility for poor inaugurated in Haryana
Jind: A facility for providing free meals to the poor and needy was inaugurated at Jayanti Devi temple here today. The facility, named ‘Anna (food) Kshetra’, would serve meals everyday from 11 AM to 1.30 PM, and was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner of this district Ajit Balaji Joshi. “At this ‘Anna Kshetra’ no poor person would go hungry,” Joshi said, and directed the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to ensure the facility runs without any problem. After inaugurating the ‘Anna Kshetra’, the Deputy Commissioner toured of the temple premises and gave directions to beautify it. Joshi also directed the officials to construct a parking space and park near the temple for the convenience of the visitors. He was accompanied by SDM Yogesh Kumar Mehta, Tehsildar Ramfal Kataria and various other administrative officials of this district. (PTI)
Naxal surrenders in Chhattisgarh
Raipur:A 22-year-old Naxal, carrying a cash reward of Rs one lakh on his head, on Tuesday surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s insurgency-hit Dantewada district, police said. Harish Mandavi, a member of Malangir LGS (local guerilla squad) turned himself in before senior police and CRPF officials, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Kamlochan Kashyap told PTI. Mandavi has been active in Malangir area of south Bastar since 2012 and was allegedly involved in several Naxal incidents during this period, the SP said. “In his statement, the rebel confessed that he was disappointed over the high-handedness of senior cadres from Andhra Pradesh. “Besides, provisions under surrender policy of Chhattisgarh government also impressed him to lay down his arm”, he said. Necessary assistance will be provided to him as per the rehabilitation and surrender policy of the government, the officer added. (PTI)
