SHILLONG: Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Minister Prestone Tynsong informed that they have been unable to appoint a full-fledged Block Development Officer (BDO) for the Mawphlang Community and Rural Development Block since the State Government is facing a problem of shortage of officers.
“From the side of my department, we had submitted a proposal to the Personnel department on the urgency for the appointment of a BDO at the Mawphlang C&RD Block office. I have also had a discussion with the Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma on this. I am hopeful that we would be able to appoint a full-fledged BDO shortly,” Tynsong said here on Wednesday.
When asked if the tussle between the DCA Minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh and Mawphlang local MLA Kennedy C. Khyriem had delayed the appointment of BDO, C&RD Minister said these were false allegations.
Earlier, there were allegations that the delay in the appointment of BDOs was due to the tussle between Lyngdoh and Khyriem.
Sources had alleged that both the legislators wanted the officer of their choice to be appointed as the BDO.
“In view of the objection of both the DCA Minister and Mawphlang local MLA, the department finally had to defer the appointment of BDO,” sources had alleged.
“Both the DCA Minister and Mawphlang local MLA have also met on the need to appoint the BDO at Mawphlang. In fact, both of them were also very much concerned about the difficulties faced by the people of the villages falling under the Mawphlang C&RD block office,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the Mawphlang C&RD Block Office has been without a BDO for more than three months and at present the BDO of Mylliem C&RD Block has been given an additional charge to look after the block office at Mawphlang.
Further, sources revealed that Mawphlang C&RD Block Office covers 246 villages and around 72,000 (Seventy Two Thousands) (approx.) population according to General Census 2010.
According to sources, the block office been divided into 2 Constituencies, namely Mawphlang Constituency & Sohiong Constituency adding that there are many Government departments offices which surrounds the place namely, PHE Dept, PWD, ICDS, Police Outpost, PHC, C&RD etc.
“But out of these Government offices, Mawphlang C&RD Block Office is one of the important Offices in which people are depending upon for many developmental purposes such as to avail all developmental Schemes and project be it individually or as a Community at large. And all these schemes can be availed only with the approval of BDO,” sources said.
