Malki play goalless draw against Langsning in SPL
Shillong:  Malki and Langsning played out a tame draw in Friday’s Shillong Premier League match at Polo Grounds. A number of chances were created by both sides on either half but the scores remained locked at 0-0 by the end of stipulation time. In Second Division football, Nongkseh rode on goals by Ailangtam Thangkiew and Kynshew Kynter to secure a 2-0 win over Mawkhar. Ailangtam scored the first goal in the 46th minute before Nongkseh were awarded a 77th minute penalty which was converted by Kynshew. Lumdiengjri recovered from a goal behind to draw 1-1 against Nongmynsong in a Third Division match at Polo Grounds. Nongmynsong were handed an early lead courtesy a 14th minute goal by Alduss Hashah. Lumdiengjri replied with a 27th minute goal through Larry Kupar Swer before the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
India, SA teams arrive inKanpur for 1st ODI
Kanpur: The Indian and South African cricket teams on Friday arrived at the city for the first ODI to be played on October 11 at the Green Park here. The two teams reached Amausi airport in Lucknow by flight from Kolkata and the players reached the team hotel here at luxury buses at around 9pm. The third and final T20 International between the two teams was abandoned onThursday without a ball being bowled due to wet outfield at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. South Africa won the T20I series 2-0. (PTI)
Nadal overcomes Sock to enter China Open semis
Beijing: World No.8 Rafael Nadal is the first player through to the China Open semi-finals, his first semis in the past year, after a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Jack Sock here on Friday. The No.3 seed fought back to defeat the World No.30 in little more than two hours. The Spaniard hit 10 less winners than Sock’s 29 but was the more consistent of the two. He committed 10 less unforced errors than his opponent’s 35. Nadal had beaten the American once before in the fourth round at Roland Garros this year and despite dropping the opening set, found his range in the second set. The Spaniard landed a break at 3-all in the decider when Sock put a forehand wide to take a 4-3 lead. He broke Sock on his first match point when the American sent a forehand long to pocket the contest. (IANS)
Ireland stun Germany 1-0 in Euro qualifiers
Dublin: The Republic of Ireland gave their Euro 2016 football qualifying hopes a massive boost by shocking world champions Germany 1-0. Striker Shane Long struck after 70 minutes to give Republic of Ireland victory here on Thursday. Germany dominated the first half but failed to get through a defiant Irish defence and, even after Long’s strike, they missed late chances. The result meant Germany didn’t get the point they needed to secure qualification. As for Ireland, guaranteeing at least third place in Group D was cause for loud celebrations at the final whistle. ‘Michael Phelps Swimming’ programme launched in Goa
Panaji: A non-competitive, global swimming programme, ‘Michael Phelps Swimming’, promoted by the Olympic gold medal champion, was launched in India, with the aim to promote the sport. Speaking to reporters on Thursday at the launch of the programme, the US Olympic champions’ sister, Hilary Phelps, said that the swimming programme was designed on techniques practiced by Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time. Phelps has won 22 medals, including 18 golds.  In Goa, the swimming programme is offered at three locations. (IANS)
