SHILLONG: The youth wing of the State BJP expressed concern over the ‘delay’ in giving scholarships to students in the State.
During a meeting held recently to discuss various problems faced by students in the state, the party observed that the main purpose of Centre’s decision to provide various scholarships to the tribal students was to enable them to support their studies. However, in Meghalaya, scholarships are provided after the examinations thus creating many a problem for the students who have to shell out money for purchase of books, paying of fees etc., from their own pockets.
“Sometimes it takes more than a year to get the scholarships,”
The party also said high fees charged by almost all the colleges and some private universities in the state adds to the misery of the students under such circumstances.
The party pointed out that even though most of the colleges and institutions in the State are getting UGC grant and schemes, students do not get the benefits of travelling concession and hostel facility.
The BJYM Meghalaya, under the leadership of Egenstar Kurkalang, also met Union Minister Tribal Affairs in Shillong and submitted a memorandum urging him that benefits provided by the Ministry to the tribal students should be properly implemented.
