SHILLONG: At a time when the city is witnessing a spurt in cases of drug abuse, the East Khasi Hills SP has said that locals are not involved in the drug trade.
“Local people are not involved in this trade. The drugs are brought from the neighboring states,” Kharkrang said.
Informing about an awareness programme called “Say no to drugs”, Kharkrang urged the youngsters to avoid substance abuse.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, about the rising drug abuse cases in the state the SP said, “Shillong being a cosmopolitan city and an educational hub, will be plagued by certain menaces.”
According to Kharkrang, there was no link between the rise in theft cases in the city and the arrest of drug abusers with the financial constraints resulting from the NGT ban on rat hole mining.
Meanwhile, he informed that the Police department is also making an effort to stop the menace of drug abuse by setting up a special intelligence cell, under the District Anti-narcotics Task Force, which deals with drug related cases.
“We are also conducting awareness programmes in schools, colleges and holding meetings with the youth to tackle the menace,” he added.
