Police Commemoration Day observed in State
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Director General of Police Rajiv Mehta on Wednesday asserted that the state police would continue to fight against militants and to bring peace in the State.
Speaking at the programme organized on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, Mehta said though Meghalaya lost some of its men in its fight against insurgency, Meghalaya police would not bow down and would actively continue its fight.
Earlier, the DGP and other police officials paid floral tributes to the police personal who were martyred in between September 1, 2014 to August 31 this year.
It may be mentioned that seven police personnel from Meghalaya – Promoth Sangma, Sombotsing K Sangma, Eldrin Lyngdoh, Aithom M Sangma, Tangseng N Arengh, Laning Ch Marak and Hebingstone A. Marak – sacrificed their lives in the line of their duty.
Senior Meghalaya police officers were present on the occasion.
Police Commemoration Day is observed on October 21 every year in remembrance of the 10 CRPF personnel who were killed on that date in 1959 at Hot Spring Post in Ladakh on the Indo-China border.

In Tura Deputy Inspector General of Police, Western Range, F.D. Sangma, Superintendent of Police, Tura, M.K. Singh, Commandant, 2nd Battalion, Goeragre, J.F.K. Marak and other officials placed wreathes and paid obeisance by offering ceremonial salami. The Tura SP read out the names of the police personnel who sacrificed their lives while performing their duty.
In West Garo Hills District there are about 30 police personnel who died while on duty.
Joining hands with the rest of the country, South West Garo Hills Police led by Superintendent of Police Aditya Goenka observed Police Commemoration Day at Ampati on Wednesday morning.
Floral tributes were paid by police officers of different ranks and Shubh Parade was also performed in memory of the brave personnel who laid down their lives while fighting against insurgency in the State, particularly in the Garo Hills region.
BSF commemoration
The BSF Meghalaya Frontier paid rich homage to 434 martyrs of all central armed police forces and state police organizations who have made the supreme sacrifice for the nation including the 47 BSF personnel and 7 Meghalaya Police personnel.
Sudesh Kumar, Inspector General, laid wreath at the War Memorial and paid homage to the martyrs. All officers and men of Frontier HQ BSF, Sector HQ Mawpat and local units were present during the parade.
