Haflong (Assam): Niranjan Hojai of BJP was elected as the new Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) in Dima Hasao district on Saturday, ending the two week-long deadlock in the Council.
NCHAC Chairman Ngamrothang Hmar declared Hojai as the 20th new Chief Executive Member after 24 members — 18 of BJP and six Independents — of the 30-Member Council voted in his favour.
Only three of the six Congress Members were present in the House on Saturday.
As per directions of Assam Governor P B Acharya, a special session of the Autonomous Council was called on Saturday for constituting the new executive committee especially for electing the new Chief Executive
Member following resignation of Debojit Thousen of the ruling Congress last week after 18 Council members joined the BJP. These 18 members on October 10 had urged the Governor for a session so that Thousen could face a no-confidence motion. On October 17, the day of the no-trust motion, Congress members and Debojit Thousen were absent though all the 18 members who had joined BJP were present.
Thousen along with his deputy Tushar Kanti Deb had submitted their resignation letters from the Autonomous Council the day before to the NCHAC Chairman. Following this, the Governor called a special session today to elect a new Chief Executive Member.
Eighteen BJP members and six Independents voted for him as the CEM. (PTI)
