11 killed in Mizoram bus accident
Aizawl: Eleven people were killed and 21 others injured when a bus fell into a deep gorge in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district, police said on Sunday. The passenger bus, plying between Aizawl and Lawngtlai, headquarter of Lawngtlai district, rolled down the gorge near Ramlaitui village last night. The deceased included four women, of whom two were pregnant, and the driver of the bus, police said. The cause of the accident was yet to be determined. However, the police suspect that the driver might have been dozed off or was drunk. The injured were taken to a hospital at Thenzawl in Serchhip district. (PTI)
Assam CM greets people on the occasion of Laxmi Puja
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has greeted people on the occasion of Laxmi Puja tomorrow wishing them health, wealth, peace, prosperity and love. In a message on Sunday, the Chief Minister said “I extend my warm greetings and good wishes to everybody both in Assam and outside on the occasion of Laxmi Puja. “Laxmi symbolises health, wealth, peace, prosperity and love. May Goddess Laxmi steer us on to the path of justice, fortune, wisdom and harmony,” Gogoi said. “Let us pray to the Goddess to instill in us the spirit of brotherhood and love for all and guide us to progress, prosperity and harmony,” he added. Assam Rifles personnel killed in ambush
Imphal: An Assam Rifles personnel was killed and two other injured in an ambush early on Sunday morning at Indo-Myanmar border at Satang village near Kotha 18 km from Manipur’s border town Moreh in Chandel district, the police said. The Manipur People Army (MPA) of the outlawed militant outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF) claimed they carried out the ambush, police officers said. A convoy of the 24 Assam Rifles (AR) was ambushed at Satang village at about 6.40 AM, they said adding, the AR troops also retaliated and the gun battle between AR and MPA lasted about five hours The deceased was identified as Paokhulet Baite (31) of the 24 AR, but the identities of the two injured AR personnel were yet to be ascertained, the police said. It might be recalled that night time curfew has been imposed along 380 km stretch of Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Ukhrul, Chandel and Churachandpur districts prohibiting movement of any person along five km span of the international border for six months since October 12. Gogoi praises power dept for unhindered supply during Pujas
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has appreciated the Power Department for ensuring uninterrupted power supply during the just-concluded Durga Puja celebrations in the state. In a statement here, the Chief Minister said the Power Department deserves praise for its efforts to provide uninterrupted power supply to thousands of puja pandals across the state. “People enjoyed visiting the well illuminated puja pandals in the evening hours as there were no power cuts or load-shedding and this also ensured hassle-free and peaceful celebrations,” he added.
