Tura: A school teacher was trampled to death by a wild herd of elephants when he tried to chase them away from his paddy field in Katuli village, near Boldamgre, on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place when the teacher of Katuli school, Arbingstone Ch Marak (48) spotted a group of seven to eight wild elephants inside his paddy field gorging on the harvest.  The father and son duo tried to scare and chase the herd away but in the process failed to notice another group of elephants a little distance away. According to police sources quoting eyewitnesses, the second herd charged at both and trampled to death the elder while the son managed to escape death narrowly.
Police from Ampati in South West Garo Hills district inform that the herd of over a hundred elephants comprising of both adults and calf had crossed over from neighbouring Bangladesh and appeared extremely agitated at the slightest provocation.
It was learnt that two adult males from the same herd had been killed inside Bangladesh territory after Bangla nationals deliberately electrocuted them in retaliation for damage to their crops during last week’s Durga Puja celebrations.
