Curtains fall on Wildlife Week celebrations

SHILLONG: The wildlife wing of the Forests and Environment department concluded its week-long celebrations at U Soso Tham Auditorium on Thursday.
The event is an annual affair that is celebrated across India and the theme chosen for this year is, ‘Living with Wild Life’.
The concluding function was graced by the Forests and Environment Minister P. Tynsong as the chief guest while Chief Secretary P.B.O. Warjri was the guest of honour.
Speaking at the function, Tynsong reminded the gathering of the need to preserve and protect wildlife in all its forms and also reaffirmed about the continuous attempts of the government at forest and wildlife conservation.
He reminded the assemblage of the Land Tenure system in the State and how it necessitates the concerted effort of all the stake holders for the richness and diversity to multiply.
He also called for more community participation to help facilitate the process of conserving forests and wild life and assured that more awareness would be created by the Government in this regard.
The day was marked by distribution of prizes to winners of the school and college level drawing and painting competition and essay writing competition organized to mark the celebration. Some members of the public were also felicitated as a mark of appreciation for their efforts at saving wildlife.
