Coral Jubilee of KJDSTA ends
SHILLONG: The concluding function of the Coral Jubilee celebrations of the Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) at U Soso Tham Auditorium here on Friday.
E.D. Nongsiang, president of the Association, urged the State government to implement the Right To Education Act (RTE) in letter and spirit and to implement the State Education Policy which is still in the drafting stage.
Governor arrives late, Laloo skips function
The official function which was scheduled to start at 1pm, began late as Governor V. Shanmuganathan, the chief guest of the function, was unable to reach the U Soso Tham Auditorium on time due to the traffic jam and the melee arising out of the rally called by the headmen in the city on Friday.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge Education, R.C. Laloo, skipped the programme altogether.
Finally, it was left to legislator Jemino Mawthoh, the special guest, to officiate as the guest of honour, while the Governor who arrived at 3:30 pm closed the programme after speaking for a few minutes.
When contacted, the Raj Bhavan sources said the postponement of the programme had been intimated to the organizers on Thursday night itself, but the organizers claimed that it was the East Khasi Hills SP who had informed them at 1pm on Friday that the Governor will arrive only at 3:30pm.
“We were informed by the SP that the Governor would not be able to come in time due to security reasons. Deputy Chief Minister in charge Education R.C. Laloo also skipped the programme for the same reason,” the organizers said.
The programme, which was scheduled to begin at 1pm, began an hour late after the organisers decided to go ahead with the programme without waiting for the VIPs.
Legislator Jemino Mawthoh said he had placed the issue of provincialization as far as services of teachers are concerned.
“Teachers have to cope with the changing times and there is a need for a paradigm shift,” he said while addressing the teachers.
Governor V. Shanmuganathan, in his short address to the gathering, requested the teachers to check the increasing drop-out rates in the State.
The audience was entertained with various song and dance numbers that showcased the students’ talents.
