SHILLONG/NONGSTOIN: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to field a young leader — Mosklander Marngar — for the Nongstoin by-poll scheduled for November 21.
The decision was taken during a marathon meeting of the party held at Nongstoin on Monday, UDP leader Jemino Mawthoh said.
The UDP candidate, a former president of West Khasi Hills Student Union (WKHSU), will file his nominations on Tuesday.
Mawthoh said that the rift within Congress and HSPDP would have positive effect on UDP’s chances of winning the election.
The UDP received the applications from two ticket aspirants –T.S Shangrit, a youth from Nongstoin and Marngar.
Besides Mawthoh, the meeting was attended by Brolding Nongsiej, MLA and other UDP leaders from Shillong.
With UDP deciding to put up candidate, Nongstoin is now all set to witness a multi-cornered contest.
The HSPDP and Congress have already named their candidates, while a kin of Late HS Lyngdoh Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait has joined the fray as an independent candidate.
The by-poll is necessitated following the death of sitting legislator HS Lyngdoh on September 26.
No nomination: With only two days are left for the candidates to file their nominations, no candidate has filed paper till date. The last date for submitting nominations is November 4.
