Veteran J&K journalist Ved Bhasin passes away
Jammu: Veteran journalist and Chairman of Kashmir Times group, Ved Bhasin passed away here due to a prolonged illness. The 86-year-old journalist was suffering from degenerative brain disease for the last several months. He breathed his last at his residence in Gandhinagar belt of Jammu city on Thursday night. Popularly known as the ‘Grand Old Man’ of English journalism in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Bhasin had written for a range of newspapers, journals and columns. He started his journalism career with Naya Samja, an Urdu weekly from 1952-54. Later, he founded the Daily Kashmir Times in 1955. He had also worked with news gathering agency UNI as its J&K bureau chief from 1963-1969. Bhasin was President of J&K Association of Journalists, Jammu Editors Conference, and Press Club of Jammu twice and served on various Press bodies including Press Advisory Committees (as Convener) for a number of years. The journalist is survived by two daughters, Anuradha Bhasin and Anju Bhasin. Anuradha is also working as a journalist. (PTI)
Nurse raped in moving bus near Bengaluru
Bengaluru: A 19-year-old nurse was allegedly raped in a moving bus by its driver at Hoskote on the city’s eastern outskirts, police said on Friday. “We have arrested accused Ravi, 26, with bus cleaner Manjunath, 23, on a complaint by the victim that she was raped by the driver when she was alone in the bus on Thursday night,” Bengaluru Rural Additional Superintendent of Police S.R. Ramesh said.The attack took place when the young woman boarded the bus at Sulibele to go to work at a nursing home in Hoskote, 30 km from the city centre. “The accused asked the cleaner to drive the bus while he raped her and dumped her later on the roadside at Nagagondanahalli. When she narrated the incident to doctors at a private hospital, police were called to take her complaint,” Ramesh said. After recording her version of the incident in Kannada, police swung into action and arrested the two people and seized the bus. The bus was registered in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. On October 3, a 23-year-old woman was gang raped by a driver and a cleaner in a moving van in the city’s southeast suburb. (IANS)
Class X girl ends life after scoring less in exams
Nalgonda (Telangana): Apparently upset over getting less marks in exams, a 16-year-old girl allegedly commit suicide, police said on Friday. Bhavani, a student of Class X, allegedly consumed a pesticide at her Godagandla village home under Chinthapally mandal in Nalgonda district on Wednesday when she was alone, sub-inspector Raghavendhar Reddy said. The girl’s father used to apparently pressurise her to get good marks in examinations, police said. However, she was upset after scoring less in her school tests recently. Soon after she consumed the pesticide, the teenager was rushed to a nearby government hospital, where she died today, police said. (PTI)
