Shillong: Pomp and fanfare marked the Silver Jubilee celebration of the North Eastern Service, All India Radio, Shillong held at U Soso Tham Auditorium here on Friday.
On the occasion Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan released a souvenir titled, “Silver waves”.
In his address, the Governor, lauded the efforts of the NES AIR,Shillong through its 25 years of public service. He also reminded the august gathering of the importance of radio as a medium of communication having one of the widest reaches as well as being one of the cheapest and most efficient medium of communication, information sharing and dissipation. “It is through the radio that Meghalaya’s own, ‘Mawlynnong’ found a mention in the Prime Minister’s recent ‘Mann ki Baat’ address to the nation”, he said.
While congratulating the NES AIR, Shillong fraternity, the Governor urged that they introduce more innovative programmes; those that would help reveal the unique culture, heritage and tradition of North East India to the rest of the country and the world.
“The NES AIR, Shillong has been playing a vital role in the cultural integration and information dissipation in the North East and it is a common platform linking together the people of the region through its varied range of programs aired at different times”, he stated.
Meanwhile, the cultural exhibition was made special by the extravagant and colourful display of folk dances and songs presented by different artistes from each of the eight North Eastern states.
Earlier in the day, a seminar on ‘Service and Impact of NES on the people of North Eastern States’ was held at the KJP Conference Hall where Dr Helen Giri (Retired Head, Department of Creative Art, NEHU), Sri Rubaiyat -ul Ali (Technical Director, National Informatics Centre, Guwahati) and Mr. Ashish Bhatnagar (DDG Engineering, AIR, Pune) were the main speakers.
It may be mentioned that NES, AIR, Shillong, started its services on January 3, 1990 and since then it has, in a major way, been instrumental in creating a sense of unison and mutual understanding amongst the different ethnic communities of the region.
