TURA: The NPP has expressed grave concern over the High Court directive on imposing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Garo Hills.
“The situation will get even worse (post the implementation of AFSPA) as is evident from Manipur and other North Eastern states,” the NPP said in a statement.
“The imposition of AFSPA will not bring any good to Garo Hills. Rather, it will bring untold miseries and sufferings to the people.”
“The imposition of the Act in Manipur and other North Eastern states has not brought any change but created a spirit of vengeance in the minds of the people,” it said in a statement.
In an emergency meeting held recently the party resolved to strongly oppose the imposition of AFSPA in Garo Hills and to send a delegation led by former Rajya Sabha member, Thomas A Sangma to meet the Home Minister in Delhi.
Further, the NPP also strongly condemned the State Government for failing to protect the citizens of the state and contain law and order in Garo Hills.
