Despite ban, children engage in mining

SHILLONG: Despite ban on extraction of coal and also child labour , juveniles continue to work in coal mines in state especially in Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills.
According to police, on November 7, police personnel along with magistrate conducted mining raids in Iongkaluh area in Jaintia Hills, and detected two juveniles, while they were extracting coal from the coal quarry belonging to one Sei Dkhar.
Earlier on November 3, while two minor boys were detained for extracting coal from a quarry belonging to one Krin Nongsiej at Pyndeng Shallang in West Khasi Hills, another  minor boy was found extracting coal from a quarry belonging to Japlin Dkhar at Moolang village in East Jaintia Hills.
Sources  said that coal mine owners are resorting  to twin violations since extraction of coal was banned by NGT and they are also using juveniles which is also prohibited  as it is child labour .

Yet again on November 7,  police along with magistrate conducted mining raids in Iongkaluh area in East Jaintia Hills  and apprehended four persons, Ditedah Tamang (46), Ragen Roy (45),  Anento Sarkari (55) and  Depok Sarkar (42)  while they were extracting coal from the coal quarry belonging to one Hari.
